SPRING SEASON 2023

SPRING SEASON

What we will look to do over the Season is run a MAT session for each JJ phase, each of which has 10 techniques

Mount
Guard
Side Mount
Standing

We need to do this over 4 sessions and need to do it on a night when everyone is present and has GI jacket so these will be planned and announced in advance

You can see these broken down and listed here:

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/1190/stma-jiu-jitsu

This will be the focus on the mat "bit" of the Class, there will still be other phases covered including Kali and KB

---------------------

We will continue to refine the GROUND series over several sessions so will ask Members to bring GI jacket for the MAT Section

We will also be covering Gi grab defences during this time in the KOPPO Jutsu

Gi chokes SHIME are done from the 4 main positions

Mount
Guard
Side mount
Rear mount

so as we work through the Ground Bud cycle we cover the variations in Positions and apply Gi chokes

We are adding to the Strategy by covering the three areas of JUDO Newaza, pins, locks and chokes, as well as the Atemi, while we build the Advanced techniques into the Ground Cycle

The Gi chokes are practiced from front and rear in the seated and kneeling positions for practice, then refined in the proper Ground Position

Use of the Gi chokes in the Mount is Advanced as you need to have the Mount Escape Counters perfected so you can remain in Mount without using your hands to post, with proper use of Hooks and Hips - you then use you body weight to assist the choke as well as keep the pin

Mount chokes are based on Tate Shiho Gatame in their original form

If you are Upa then you keep the collar grip and apply from the Guard - though it is best not to get Upa and to stay in Mount

When Yoshida beat Royce he used Tate Shiho Gatame with Sode Jime

--------------------------

We have used this to help update, streamline, and refine the 3 Newaza lists:

Shime chokes

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/184/judo-newaza-shime-chokes

Kansetsu locks:

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/1863/judo-kansetsu-locks

Osae pins:

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/139/judo-newaza-pins

This more comprehensive flow will help to progress what you are already doing, to what we have been recently covering, to what we will cover next

The JUDO NEWAZA will flow into the GroundBud JJ Combatives, and then into the Advanced MC series so you have no gaps and miss nothing out as you continue to build your Ground Game

As you know, we don't just isolate Newaza from a Judo throw or JJ TD, we have the option with a series from KEMPO, KOPPO or even SILAT, where we go to the Ground to flow straight to a Newaza finish - and the added dimension of using an AIKI pin if opponent is face down

NINJA Stuff

With NINJUTSU we primarily work Ninpo Taijutsu the Unarmed Combat

Secondary is the KOBUDO weaponry which ties in with our other Japanese and Okinawan Kobudo which is more Koryo Traditional study

Our KALI is more relevant to Weapons development, more relevant to modern GOSHIN practice, Street, SD and Combat applications, and part of our regular weekly practice

The Third, perhaps Tertiary area of Ninjutsu is the "NINJA stuff", the invisibility, escape, infiltration, etc, that make these Ninpo schools NINJA rather than Samurai

ONSHINJUTSU was of course originally practiced more outdoors and more at night - a "Modern Ninja" in a city during the day, as seen in the movies, would require updated skills and modernised equipment, so beyond the fun of speculation we don't need to be too concerned about that

The Onshinjutsu thread:

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/957/onshinjutsu-invisibility-escape

First posted in 2012 with the GoGyo five elements theory and practice - Earth, Water, Fire, Wood, Metal

then added to with the 8S, the Kihon Happo of Onshinjutsu

Stealth
Silence
Shadow
Sillouette
Shape
Shine
Surface
Spacing

As discussed these primarily comes from the Togakure Ryu and the Taijutsu needed you already have as that is primarily drawn from Gyokko Ryu

Taihenjutsu
Ukemi Kaiten rolling
Aruki walking
Tobi leaping
Climbing

We have covered some Togakure Taijutsu as well as the Biken NINJA Sword drills, which compliment and differ from the Kukishin Sword

The Onshinjutsu are covered initially as an intellectual exercise, tactics with techniques developed from that

As we are coming back to GRASS evenings, later in the Season than we may have done in other years, admittedly, we can consider Onshinjutsu on our way to the Circle, while there, and on our way back - usually we would going there in the light and coming back in the dark, and this creates the perfect environment

If you consider each of the "S", you can see how they apply

Togakure thread:
shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/1530/togakure-ryu-ninjutsu

The SANTO TONKO NO KATA of Togakure are 12 Kata that apply to NINJA Escape in Combat and we will cover those later, as we do for the Advanced gata of each Ryu

With regard to the Gyokushin and Kumogakure they were refined from the Togakure with specifics developed later

- Gyokushin specialised in Sutemi, get the enemy to the Ground, and the use of rope, both lassoo and tying an enemy - a lot more silent and stealthy than chains - the use of the Iron Claws, same as Togakure, which made Taijustu gata very different in application

- Kyukushin specialised in armour and longer missions

NINJA special skills, as listed

UNARMED

Koppo Jutsu (bone breaking)
Hicho Jutsu (jumping)
special punch snap sword - Gikan
Sutemi sacrifice throws - Gyokushin

WEAPONS

biken jutsu - ninja sword
shuriken and metsubishi
shuko claws
shoge - blade/sickle and chain/rope/ring
kuntai
tessen and jutte
kusurifundo chains
Iron Claws - Gyokushin
demon mask - - Kumogakure
armoured sleeves - Kumogakure
kama-yari
hojojutsu - lassoo - Gyokushin

NINPO

santo tonko
stealth - onshinjutsu
henso disguise
survival tactics for extreme environments
deception and mind games
spiritual and esoteric
mindsets, meditation, hypnosis

We are not going to go mad and do lots of new and different "NINJA" stuff at Class and on Grass, this is an expansion of what you already do, based on the Taijutsu and weapon equipment you already had, while acknowledging our NINJA background, with it's difference to the Samurai schools and the relevance to our Modern Goshin Street Art

We will go over Togakure Taijutsu and Sword gata again, there are 9 of each, and blend in with the other Ryuha we focus on, as listed

- for Gyokushin the Sutemi are the throws you already know from JJ Combatives and Judo Gokyo, with some variation and adaptation you have already seen in the Ninpo Ryu so far

- for Kumogakure the Taijutsu and weapons are done in armour, so the Concepts for that are covered the same way as Kukishin armour and Shinyu Jujutsu armour Concepts

Monday, 6 March 2023

Going into March, with our new earlier Class Monday time, and looking ahead to Spring Camp and then evening Grass training, we can streamline our advanced training to get the progression we want

NINPO

We will revisit the and expand on the Dakentaijutsu of the Kuki Shinden Ryu, both on mats and on Grass, taking Gata from the 4 scrolls

The weapons we use are from the 4 Weapon scrolls - Hanbo, Sword, Jo and Bo

The Jo v Sword is something we already plan to expand upon this year - the Ninpo Jo compared to the Seitei Jo a used against the Sword

The next progression will be further Sword v Sword - when we get round to that

SILAT

Entry, strike, TD and pin series

Later in the year we can look further into Silat "gata" and progressions, some of the TD and ground series

If we cover any Silat weaponry this year it will relate to both the KALI weapons and the NINJA weapons, drills and applications - the KARAMBIT is the obvious option for those who want to explore this knife

KEMPO

The 2O extensions and F5 we are looking at will TD and Ground strike finishes

The 3P extensions we will look at next, and the longer sequences from F4

JUJUTSU

The Aiki TD and pins, as well as Aiki projections

We have covered Tachi Dori and can revisit - compare with our NINPO MUTADORI

We will look at JO DORI as part of AIKI as well as JO counters

JUDO pins, locks and chokes - compare to the JJ Combative cycle

JJ - continue with FS and RD in the Series - looking at the expanded options

FLOW into JJ from a Kempo, Ninpo or Silat TD

CLASS will still have the usual elements

KALI start with Double sticks

KB end with Sparring

Kali, WC, CRA, NRG drills

Drills and "gata" sequences at CLASS will be the varying factor - we will again streamline the drills done on WOOD and MATS alongside the EXTRA seasonal training done on GRASS

Summary

SWORD

Ninpo Biken
Concepts for the shorter closer Ninja sword and how they apply in Kali Weapons and Unarmed Taijutsu

When looking at the more extreme end on KALI and SILAT, the use of blades for short range killing, there are a lot of Concepts that appear in NINJUTSU - every country and culture has its own version of Assassins and spies in their war history so it's not unexpected that a lot of stuff comes up in different parts of the world st different times

There is no such thing as a Kali or Silat Ninja as such, but there well might have been

--------------------------------------------------------

UNARMED

Used Wing Chun drills as base

Looked at concepts from London Street fights at the end of the 80s where our WC lineage is from

Compare some WC sets to the NINPO in the KOTO Ryu and the natural movement in Shinden Fudo

Compare KEMPO sets such as Five Swords

Punch attacks
Pak Sao
Chun Sao
Fut Sao
Yuan Sao
Kao Sao
Jut Sao

Low kick
Palms to body and head
Man Sao blocks and strike
Ura onikudaki
Elbow
Arm breaks
Sweeps

Use of striking as it appears in Mok Jong dummy form, the linear trunk strikes

Remember:

The Black Belt only covers the first two inches of your ass - covering the rest is up to you

As you know we cover a lot of the Judo NEWAZA that is introduced on the Kodokan syllabus at Orange and Green Belt, some on Blue Belt, that is not covered on the Gracie Combatives

These include ground techniques such as a full set of pins that are not just Mount and Side Mount, the Side Mount submissions, and the Juji Gatame armbar done "one legged", as well as the Gi chokes, and of course the Atemi strikes which "grapplers" hate to be hit with

These are techniques that a Judo Blue Belt will know that a BJJ Blue Belt might not

(they are on the Gracie Master Cycle, as all of Judo is, and a Gracie Purple Belt will know these - whether a BJJ Purple Belt does is another matter)

And, as we often refer to, both Helio and Royce were beaten by a Japanese Judo master, Kumura and Yoshida respectively

Keep in mind, when it comes to combat sport fights such as UFC, who trained with who is not always the bottom line, and "lineage" is not as important as many people, especially the Wing Chun community, tend to believe

When Royce was winning all those UFCs in the 90s there was a spate of magazine articles and other publications about "how to beat" him, and "what they would do" - this was before the Internet so no keyboard warriors on the You Tube clips, however it did get fairly ridiculous - same as all the idiots who were on about Tyson, "what I would do" and "how to beat him"

I inevitably got asked this sort of question - my response would be that if I am in Royce's Guard, which is where he won most of his fights from, I would not be in the cage at the UFC, I would be at the Academy taking a lesson, preferably private or semi private

Similar to the first march Ruas seminars, just after he won UFC 7, and many of us were there with the JKD community - a lot of us, myself included, got to experience his techniques in demo - the consensus at the evening discussion was that nobody would want to ever get in the cage and fight him for real

Ultimately, at STMA where this was all developed, we are not concerned with cage matches that none of us are ever going to have, or boxing matches we are never going to have, we are concerned about what to do in a fight on the dance floor, at the bar, or outside the kebab shop, as that was our main concern while developing this system as Nightclub Doormen, where we would be every Friday and Saturday night - that is what our Boxing Punching and Ground Grappling and functionalised for

Judo pins - post started in 2009, updated in 2020

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/139/judo-newaza-pins

Judo chokes - started in 2009, updated in 2018, then again December 2022

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/184/judo-newaza-shime-chokes

Judo locks - not published until December 2022, then updated in Jan 2023, for the reasons given at the time

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/1863/judo-kansetsu-locks

This will be covered and referred to on the Mat for all of this Season, possibly the whole year, as we develop our Game further

We are going to start using KARATE forearm pads and the hand mitts again this Season - VT gloves are OK for those who have them and want to use them

These will be used for KARATE and KEMPO Sparring, before we put on the Boxing Gloves for full KB Sparring - and will also be used in some drills as we look into the KARATE phase of KB as well as the SD applications - we are going to be comparing the Karate SD sets with the Kempo extensions with the Entry and Strike phase of SILAT

The TD and Ground phase of SILAT will parallel JJ and Kenpo F5
