Thursday 1 October

Our most intense session so far.

No newbies or beginners, all experienced members.

We split the class into 2 groups:

woodies - doing Kali drills with the stix
paddies - drilling Muay Thai on pads.

Chick and Duck together on the Thai pads which is always a winning combination!

The woodies examined complex sinawalli drills before going into serrada single stick.

The paddies worked intense Muay Thai combinations on the pads.
We were able to demo the full use of driving punches, elbows, and the 3 uses of the knee - long, clinch and kradot.

Josh and I were able to take Kravi to the next level with the double strikes and we showed how Krabi's concepts of driving power and pressure are achieved on the Thai pads with two long ABCs - one starting from punching, one starting from kicking.

Paul and I were able to demo long use of the bokken through the two ranges of sword.

And there was great sparring at the end as always.

On a session like last night we will be able to split the class into woodies and paddies again. 2 groups of 5. This enables me to float between the 2 groups, working in a 6, so every member gets maximum skill uptake on their chosen element.

Stix:

We will make sure all woodies go through the sinawalli drills and serrada drills so they can work together.

We will introduce the krabi drill for all woody members.

Those who want to take up bokken will be able to join in with the boken drills Paul and I are playing from kenjutsu.

There will be the option for all woodies to play stix vs bokken.

Paddies:

We will develop advanced ABCs on both the focus pads for boxing and Thai pads for Thai Boxing, as well as use of the shield. We will make sure we drill to functionalise these ABCs and bring them out in free sparring.

Everyone can spar freestyle SC. We know this.

Our aim is to get more members competant at boxing and FC KB, then add lo kix. As Chico found last night, proper freestyling with the low kix and the leg block changes the game completely.

Thai boxing is a lot more than just kickboxing with low kicks added - it is an entire art and one we've only just really began to tap at STMA.

And that's before we start adding knees in the clinch.

And that's before we bring it on the mat for MMA and add throws!
