Burma - Myannar
Vietnam
Cambodia
Laos
India
If you look at a world map you can find Thaland easily
- Burma is to the left the West, Laos top right, Cambodia bottom right, Vietnam running down the right hand side of Laos/Cambodia
- India is over to the west even further
While we extensively source the MA of Thailand/Siam, Krabi Krabong, including it's Unarmed phase, into Muay Boran to Muay Thai, and use the Silat of Indonesia, we have never needed to source any of the systems from the other counties in that part of the World
The main reason for this is the amount of duplication and crossover has made it unnecessary, that and the amount of time it takes to study and assimilate a completely new art and culture from a new country with new language and terminology
The JKD Community have researched these countries extensively, and have spent time learning, practicing and passing on some of it - Dan Inosanto himself has been learning and progressing with Burmese Bando for 20 years
There are schools for Burmese and Vietnam arts in different countries, including the UK, and these have come here and schools been set up the same way as the Japanese and Chinese schools were
The Japanese MA influnece around the world means a lot of these schools use a Gi and belt rank system, Bando being an example
The other influence is the ring sport where they wear shorts and fight hard like Muay Thai, Lethwei being a example
LAOS
Muay Lao - yes it's the same as Muay Thai
VIETNAM
Vovinam Viet Vo Dao - set up in 1938, supposed to be some indigenous art, with weapons and unarmed phases, with a lot of Karate and Kung Fu imported so it's really a hybrid - Gis and belts
CAMBODIA
Pradel Seray - Kbach Kun Pradal Khmer - Kun Kkmer - basically the same as Muay Thai - shorts and ring sport
Khmer wrestling - done in shorts rather than Gi, win by pin
Bokator - Krabi Krabong essentially - swords and staff
INDIA
Musti Yuddha - similar to Muay Thai
Malla Yuddha - wrestling
Kalaripayattu - known as Kaliri - a blanket term like "kung fu"
- seems to be the main MA of India, and you have Northern and Southern styles - war art, Weapons and Unarmed - some claim this is the oldest MA in the world, oldest recorded, depending on who you talk to, and whether that can be verified
With JKD the main premise is of course, Absorb What Is Useful, Discard What Is Useless, and that applies to how much any JKD practitioner or teacher absorbed from these additional SE Asia MA into their own practice - that is where the research and experience to date comes from
