Recruitment Autumn 2022
For the first time in 3 years we are looking to recruit some new members - we are looking to take on two or maybe three people
Ideally we will trial some prospects, sign them up, and they will get their kit ordered and delivered ready for the Autumn Season
The STMA website is still running - on Google search for "Martial Arts Croydon" and this should be on page 2:
http:// www.ShiroTora.co.uk
Have a go at a search and see for yourself
We also have a Gumtree ad running for the next few weeks:
www.gumtree.com/p/classes/shiro-tora-budo-kai-white-tiger-martial-arts-south-croydon-/1438437883
have a look at that, see what you think - feedback is welcome - the ad includes a link to the website so prospects can click through
As you know, taking on new members expands the Group
Because we want to keep the Group "top heavy", the new members train with you to learn the skills and drills quickly so they can start moving up
This is the opportunity for you ALL to go back to basics and run over the details and attributes for each technique and drill
You all know Box Set One - how many of you, whether on pads, shadow, on a bag, spend time practicing JUST the Jab or the Cross or the Hook
You all know the Sinawalli chains, 2, 4,6, 8, etc - how often do we spend time on the individual sets 2 count, 4 count
We do 3 count and 5 count Sombrada - how often do we break it down into it's parts and practice the direct applications
In Kempo we do the sets eg Five Swords - when do we break down the sequence and work the weapon to the target repeatedly

some of these go back to 2014
have a click through and see what you think
Some further advertising info to send to Prospects:
Our weapons section starts with Kali and then we include the weapons of Ninjutsu, specifically Kukishinden, which include the short and long Swords, the Hanbo, then later the Jo and Bo staff
The Unarmed section sources from the Ninpo Taijutsu, usually Koto Ryu and Gyokko Ryu, and we also cover Kempo Jujutsu in that range, as well as the Trapping of Jun Fan and Kali - we sometimes put the mats down and cover takedowns and the Ground Fighting, which is NOT the sports "rolling" done in BJJ clubs, nor is it Judo Newaza
The Kickboxing section is at the end, where we do impact work, drills with protection on and spar - it is nothing like "MMA" or any sports KB, it is more like Karate sparring to develop reflexes, timing, and distance

KOPPO JUTSU - Bone smashes with body weapons
KOSHI JUTSU - Organ, nerve and muscle smashes with body weapons

This will be something we will be using to fill out our practice over the next few months
Moving into 2021 we have more opportunity to source our base material
KALI
UNARMED Kenpo/Kempo Jujutsu/Karate/ Ninpo Taijutsu/WC JF
GROUND Jiu Jitsu / Judo
KICKBOXING Savate Thai Boxing
So depending on whether we have more time inside the DOJO, outdoor at the CIRCLE, we can balance current training with additions
CIRCLE Ninja training in the old Ryuha, as listed above and on the relevant threads in the NINJUTSU Board - the main six NINJA Schools
DOJO where we can carry on as we have been, and source some JKD Concept and Attribute material, focus on Interception, Trapping, and look more at the material posted on the WING CHUN 2019 thread on the FENG WEI Board
By 2023, our 40 year Anniversary, I intend to cover Silat, as well as our Kung Fu schools of Choy Li Fut (mainly weapons) and Hung Gar mainly Unarmed
All Kohai should be Black Belt by 2023 - and this will all be part of your development
All existing Black Belts - this will add to and expand on what you already can do - and get you up those Dan Grades - 2nd for returning BB, 3rd, 4th, and your path to FIFTH DAN SHIDOSHI
In the KICKBOXING Phase we have added and expanded the SAVATE ABCs, Attack By Combination
Savate is our longest range, and the art that has the most complex ABC when compared to the freestyle Karate and the Thai
This compliments the longer use of Taijutsu development in the Unarmed Phase
We have added 3 Savate sets of 8 techniques
4 and 5 are ABC of increasing diversity and complexity, including unique boxing ABC not seen anywhere else in the curriculum
Set 6 is kick combinations, including development of the Pursuing Kicks
Though savate can be practiced on pads, these enchainments are practiced as partner drills, then brought out in sparring
IF YOU SEE IT TAUGHT, YOU SEE IT FOUGHT
In the first half of 2019 we have done a considerable amount of mat training while still at the Shirley hall, and a lot of matching Grass sessions since we have been back at the Sanderstead hall.
The main list hasn't changed, though we have cycled most of it. The main focus has been the development of the NINPO, which can be seen on the updated board, with notes on everything we do including the schools, having an update to the notes on their respective threads
This has been around further exploring the KOTO and GYOKKO Ryu with their respective arts of KOPPO and KOSHI Jutsu
Though too numerous to list in depth here, they can be seen on the Ninpo board . Here is the breakdown
GYOKKO RYU:
Sanshin Kata
KIhon Happo
Jo Ryaku Unarmed Taijutsu
Chu Ryaku Unarmed MUTODORI against Knife or Kodachi
Ge Ryaku MUTODORI against Katana
KOTO RYU:
Kurai Dori
JODEN
CHUDEN
OKUDEN
Hekito MUTODORI
The interesting thing about KOTO Ryu is that the more advanced the level, the more simple and basic the technique seems to be. These are, in fact, advanced concepts for Interception, taking the initiative, and intercepting the intent.
We balance the practice with KARATE and KEMPO in class, and on the grass we go right to the ground.
So far this year we have been covering the following Ninja Ryu:
Gyokko Ryu KOSHI jutsu
Koto Ryu KOPPO jutsu
Kukkishinden Ryu HIKEN jutsu - specifically HANBO
Togakure Ryu NINJUTSU - more in concept than technique, the use of special weapons, escapes, and deceptions
The KOPPO and KOSHI, as two sides of one coin, methods pair up well with the KARATE and KEMPO in the Unarmed phase
We didn't update this list in 2017 as it didn't change, we just ran through the same syllabus, just with different people.
In 2018 we have opened the new dojo and have started deeper "Ninja" training starting with Gyokko Ryu Koshijutsu. This is not just about the set of techniques themselves, which compliment the existing Kempo sets we practice, it includes a study of the History of the Ryuha, where the techniques came from, and their modern application and relevance.
Gyokko Ryu includes all the techniques in the Ninja Book Of Heaven, as that is where they came from, which includes:
Kihon Happo
Sanshin
Kamae
Juropokken
Mutodori
Taihenjutsu
There are 3 levels to Gyokko Ryu, JO, CHU and GE, each comprising of 8 techniques (with an additional 4 on Jo level )
You will recognise these as being Top, Middle and Bottom respectively, eg Jodan Uke, Geda Barai, Chudan Tsuki, etc
KALI
Sinawali even drills - 2,4,6,8 and chains
Before members go onto Odds 3,5,7,9 they will do Krabi drills - we are trying out a new format for new Phase One
Serrada - members learn largo range drills with single stick and knife
then learn hubud including empty hand
then sombrada with stick and knife
then hand sombrada
before doing 5 count, box count, and the advanced knife drills
KRABI KRABONG
8 step with double stix
10 step and 5 step
Krabong - jo spear - though phase one members are not obliged to acquire the boken and jo set yet, they can start krabi krabong by doing their double stix against the krabong of senior members
The stepping drills of krabi link to the unarmed stepping drills of karate
KARATE
5 step kumite
3 step
kihon ippon one step
jiyu ippon one step
karate sets on pads
building up Karate kumite into part of regular practice
We will put on karate pads to do kumite drills and sparring before doing karate drills in impact along with the boxing drills before free KB sparring
KEMPO
As well as the regular progressive Street SD techniques,
Star block
5 step kempo
Free form series
so Kempo practice comes out in sparring, the checks become part of karate, link to the WC traps, and the BASE Free Kempo technique links, via Lop Sao, to the HIA series
WING CHUN
As a group
Level One -
lin sil die dar - simultaneous punch and block drills
kick and entry drills
RAT
parry and gunting Entry
Jik Chun Choy - Straight Blast
HKE - Terminate
WC Kempo - series of 5 "kempo" sets based on WC forms
HIA series - 10 sets
Advanced for Seniors:
NRG drills
Chi Sao sparring
Gor sao - advanced trapping - Chi sao set one
In class after kali we will take Unarmed hubud into CRA practice - at this time we will let anyone who wants to put on the kneepads and do the Ground Bud drill - we will add in techniques in Ground Bud just as we do for CRA Hubud
NEWAZA
There will be progressive training in techniques in each stage
- Mount, Rear Mount, Guard, Side Mount
- Reflex and Fight Simulation drills
At some point we will look to get mats to be able to do Mat Day and have newaza sparring
Now we have had the long 3 month summer camp and set up the new dojo we are in the last stage of training for this year, the last 3 month trimester leading up to XMas
At this time we have ten members, four of who are brand new. We will consider taking on maybe two more so our group is twelve. As there are no former members looking to come back these next two will be new recruits. We may wait til the new year before recruiting, to get the current members past red belt into phase one
At this time we have one session and focus on three areas, the Goshin modern areas
Kali - double stix, single stick, knife
Kickboxing - impact, partner drills, sparring
Unarmed Combat
Mainly Kempo Jujutsu
Karate kumite
Wing chun drills and chi São sparring
What we aren't able to do with the limited time of one two hour session is the Koryu training of traditional weapons and jujutsu
Kobudo long weapons
Krabi krabong
Jiu Jitsu shoot and td
JJ newaza
What we need to consider is some grass sessions to cover the koryu
Even after getting new mats to do mat day, this will be goshin mat JJ, newaza and sparring
There are five phases to learning a technique
1. Learn the technique
2. Practice the technique
3. Perfect the technique
4. Maintain the technique
5. Functionalise the technique
It is the fifth stage, Functionalisation, that most so called martial arts fail to do, and that depends whether you are making the technique functional to pass a grading belt exam, for a competition, for self defence, for combat in a military situation
One of the problems in functionalising for competition is that is does not take into consideration all the factors. Is the match semi or full contact. What ground is it fought on, mats, hard floor, or a boxing ring.
What we ate concerned with is taking the techniques we learn from traditional systems, and the drills we use to develop them, and make them functional for self defence in a modern situation
Our sets and drills are done in the ideal phase, the ideal environment, for repetitive learning and perfecting as well as maintenance
To make the moves functional we drill them so they work against a real world opponent, so we have drills to develop the proper real world Street reflexes not Sport reflexes and Fight Simulations that follow the patterns on what Really Happens
The three types of opponent
1. Bigger, heavier, stronger than you
2. A puncher, going for the head KO blow
3. A grappler, somebody with some skill in grappling
Your techniques are all functionalised to work against each type of attacker, modifications and variations on the technique and the development drill
A fourth area is what to do if the attacker has some kind if weapon in his hand. Not just the actual weapon defence drills we do such as storm, lance and rod, but what to so if an incidental weapon is in play in a standing clinch and when the fight goes to the ground
A fifth area, a ninja area, is how to pull a hidden weapon in the standing grapple VG phase, or ground, to change the direction of the fight
So we work to make each technique work through the five stages of development, and make sure stage five takes into account all three kinds of attacker
Fear NO man at ANY rang
