STMA Summer Camp 2021 - Monday August 9th 1pm to 4 pm

SUMMER CAMP 2021

Monday August 9th 1pm to 4 pm

It may seem a long way off as we are in mid May at time of posting and only just back at the DOJO, though time passes quickly and we are about 12 weeks away, a dozen CLASS and a dozen GRASS before we get there

Working on the premise that our new structure will stay in place, Monday evening Class and Wednesday evening Grass, this will be a proper outdoor daytime course, as in previous years

The first ever STMA Summer Camp was August 1983, the first time I ever taught an outdoor session as a young Black Belt to a Group, and it has been an annual tradition since then

This will be the 39th STMA Summer Camp

Hopefully next year, with all the nonsense well behind us, we will have a strong Group for the 40th Summer Camp

1983 - First Summer Camp - mainly Karate, with some Judo, the first time I taught Grappling outdoors
1992 - 10th Camp - a lot of Ninjutsu incorporated, and outdoor Sword
2002 - 20th Camp - start of VT/MMA craze, so we did a lot of Koryo to balance
2012 - Tigers from the Caterham Dojo were there

2022 - next year - will YOU be there ?

The Summer Camp of 2012

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/979/stma-annual-summer-camp-2012

Interestingly we refereed to it as the 4th Camp, as it was the 4th Camp for the new Caterham Dojo, the first having been 2009 - as this was the first time I had been using the Shiro Tora name for my own Dojo

Notice Ice was there, as was Bane, and how we discussed the Camp in advance, as well as after - we used to do that a lot in those days

Ice received his Black Belt about a month after the Camp:

Summer Camp 2020 - last year

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/1680/stma-summer-camp-monday-august

Well worth re reading this

The oddest year ever where we were forced to have all training outdoors, and the Camp was the hub of all this, the centrepoint of the Season

We also had it on the Monday, something we could consider again

Interesting thread from 10 years ago, setting up the 2012 Camp

Note how we used to discuss the day and arrange it on the Forum thread

You we see we discuss Grass techniques including Dance Of Death

We have covered Dance Of Death regularly this year, on the Grass, and on the mat

When practicing Jujutsu, I always make the point that what we do here at STMA is Kempo Jujutsu, and we always consider the Atemi strikes, in standing, TD, and Ground

A decade after my posts on this thread, having done a Spring Camp, and gearing up for the 2021 Summer Camp, these points are as relevant as ever

CAMP Day Summary

We treated the whole day as one long Camp - another new way of doing things

1 to 4 pm - 3 hours on the Grass - KORYO

4 hour break

8 to 5 pm - 2 hours in Class - GOSHIN

What could have been an idea would be to have an extra hour at the hall, starting at 7pm, so a full 3 hours of each format, with a 3 hour break

(On this format, Members not available for Camp who were turning up at 8pm would still have their regular 2 hour Class, though would of course be welcome to turn up early for the extra hour)

Something to consider for future Camps

One of the most unusual weather patterns we've had meant a lot of changing round

First section we were in and out of the Grass then Canopy, carrying the weapons back and forth as we weren't sure if the rain would be on or off

Second section we stayed under Canopy with torrential rain above and some coming through

Third section was out on the Grass under the Sun

Fourth section was then evening Class at the hall, most of which was on the mats

We covered everything just not in the order we originally planned - weather meant no opportunity for TDs and Ground on the Grass, so we saved that for evening on mats

WEAPONS

Bo - Jo- Bokken - Nitto - Hanbo - Tonfa

8 Step - weapons v each other

KUMI specific for each weapon, and weapon v a different weapon - concepts for angles, distance and timing

STICK and KNIFE Def drills and sets - including Disarms and Weapon Retention - as well as the concept for taking the attacker's weapon and using it against him, and for not to let this happen to you

CLASS we covered LARGO stick and TRAPPING, with Chi Sao sparring and drills, then with KB drills and sparring at the end

NEWAZA on the Mats

Ground bud
Hubud and trapping concepts and HKE from Standing taken to Ground range

SHIME - GI chokes

ATEMI strikes

KATAME pins and transitions

Build up a comprehensive Ground Game with position, transition, submission, with the strikes and "dirty" tricks that make STREET fighting work
