A girl watches her mother making a pot roast, and notices she cuts the ends off the roast. She asks her mother why she does this: "why do you cut the ends off the pot roast?"
"Because my mother did it" she says.
So the girl goes to ask her grandmother:
"why do you cut the ends off the pot roast?"
Her grandmother answers:
"Because my mother did it"
Finally the girl goes to her great grandmother and asks:
"why do you cut the ends off the pot roast?"
and she replies:
"because the pan is too small".
It's always worth questioning any "traditions" that are passed on to see if they really do have any modern relevance.
