Handy pointers

We already have the list of WT phrases. But here is a list of points I often say in class during the drilling which act as pointers and are easy to remember.

Nothing interesting down there
Keep your hands up. You only put your hand low if you are striking low or blocking low. Otherwise keep them up by your head for protection.

If it's hanging limp it's useless - you want it stiff and upright and in place
Refers to keeping your guard up.

Step don't stretch
If you can't reach with your pak sao, lock, strike, the step into place - don't stretch yourself off balance and never twist yourself into an uncomfortable position. Stay in a stance that gives you power and control.

Don't let him put his butt in your face
Refers to hubud. You want to push your punyo - the butt of your stick - into his face. Similarly he wants to put his butt in your face. Your forward pressure is what keeps the status quo.

If you expose yourself, you can get in trouble
Refers to keeping your guard up
(not nude kickboxing)

Drills build skills
Put in the flight time

Big hard number 2
We all have power and torque on our number #1 strike, the caveman strike from the caveman chamber. But how strong is your number #2 strike from the backhand chamber. Remember - you want a big hard number two.

After a big number two, remember to wipe properly
This refers to the largo five step - following the downward #2 strike, the opponent will thrust #5. You must wing block in proper time and with good form.

We don't want to see two guys pulling each other off in the dojo
This means we don't want inexperienced people doing things like chi sao and developing bad habits. Similarly we don't want beginners "instructing" each other in techniques, be it kix, lox, or whatever. Leave the instructing to the insructors.
