There are five phases to learning a technique
1. Learn the technique
2. Practice the technique
3. Perfect the technique
4. Maintain the technique
5. Functionalise the technique
It is the fifth stage, Functionalisation, that most so called martial arts fail to do, and that depends whether you are making the technique functional to pass a grading belt exam, for a competition, for self defence, for combat in a military situation
One of the problems in functionalising for competition is that is does not take into consideration all the factors. Is the match semi or full contact. What ground is it fought on, mats, hard floor, or a boxing ring.
What we ate concerned with is taking the techniques we learn from traditional systems, and the drills we use to develop them, and make them functional for self defence in a modern situation
Our sets and drills are done in the ideal phase, the ideal environment, for repetitive learning and perfecting as well as maintenance
To make the moves functional we drill them so they work against a real world opponent, so we have drills to develop the proper real world Street reflexes not Sport reflexes and Fight Simulations that follow the patterns on what Really Happens
The three types of opponent
1. Bigger, heavier, stronger than you
2. A puncher, going for the head KO blow
3. A grappler, somebody with some skill in grappling
Your techniques are all functionalised to work against each type of attacker, modifications and variations on the technique and the development drill
A fourth area is what to do if the attacker has some kind if weapon in his hand. Not just the actual weapon defence drills we do such as storm, lance and rod, but what to so if an incidental weapon is in play in a standing clinch and when the fight goes to the ground
A fifth area, a ninja area, is how to pull a hidden weapon in the standing grapple VG phase, or ground, to change the direction of the fight
So we work to make each technique work through the five stages of development, and make sure stage five takes into account all three kinds of attacker
