NINPO

As we are trying to make the proper use of NINPO as comprehensive as possible this year, we have posted about the Jin Ryaku No Maki, The Book Of Man, and listed the techniques

In addition to the TenChiJin thread started in 2009, with explanation:

The new Jin Maki thread:

shirotoratiger.proboards.com/thread/1895/book-man-jin-ryaku-maki

As is explained, the Jin Man Book is made up of selected techniques from the first scrolls of the first six schools, which you have already covered and we are revisiting

---------------------------------------------

Each school will cover the Ryuha in a different way, some will focus on "completing" a ryu, some will work on the levels

In the Jin Man Maki book, the first scroll for the 6 densho are covered, which forms the syllabus up to 4th Dan - after a Shidoshi has passed his 5th Dan test and is given his own scrolls, and the licence to start his own Dojo in his own name, he will naturally want to look further into the higher scrolls for the ryuha - depending on his teacher, he may have covered a little or a lot of these already

- most use the TEN Heaven book to start teaching their students, their own practice will involve the Chudan and up Densho, and they would start using this material in their Class when the students had a suitable frame work, based on TEN eg rolling, Sanshin, Kihon Happo, Kamse, Mutadori

With Gyokko Ryu and Koto Ryu the Okuden scroll is all Mutadori, so once the basic framework from the TEN had been established, possibly with students at 5th Kyu and up, it would be easy enough to have sessions involving the Mutodori of these two schools - the mindset is different from a structured modern DO such as Karate or Kendo, so you get a "Green Belt" doing gata from the Okuden Densho that is "supposed to be for 6th dan and higher"

In Japan, in the original schools, the TenChiJin was used to get students up to where they passed the 5th Dan - any student could go to a session run by any teacher, Shidoshi or Shihan, whether their own, or visiting another - like the GOKYO in Judo, students were taught to this structure - the 5th Dan and up were then personally taught by the SOKE, and these lessons would be based on the Chudan and up Densho, as well as the Oral transmissions from the other 3 Ryuha - this is what got the student up to 10th Dan Shihan

-----------------------------------------

At STMA we have worked the Ryuha in this order

Gyokko Ryu

Koto Ryu

Shinden Fudo Ryu Daken

Kukkishin Daken

Kukkishin weapons

We have covered some of, and still need to go further into

Togakure Taijutsu

Togakure Weapons

Shinden Fudo Jutaijutsu

Takagi Yoshi Ryu Jutaijutsu

We sometimes refer to all this training as KOPPO, to use that as a generic term for Unarmed Ninpo Taijutsu - this lines up with KEMPO, KARATE, KALI, etc, and gives it one easy name to differentiate it - and they all start with a K

Takamatsu Sensei would often refer to himself, or his "past" self, when he was a young Warrior abroad as "a Warrior of the Koppo Tradition" so Koppo as a general term is something we get from him

At a STMA session we may cover a KEMPO set, a KOPPO gata, with an Entry from KALI, SILAT or JUN FAN, with a JJ Newaza, so it allows us to streamline what we are doing and from which Source Art

As for the "other" three Ryuha we only refer to these when it is relevant to the session, and in relation to a Gata from one of the other schools, as everything comes from there

GIKAN Ryu Koppo

GYOKUSHIN Ninpo

KUMAGAKURE Ninpo

So while GYOKKO Ryu and KOTO Ryu have been covered and cycled we are, in this Season, covering in more depth the Gata from the scrolls form Unarmed Taijutsu of Kukishinden Ryu, initially in CLASS on the mat, later on GRASS - this will then pair up with the Weapon training from KUKISHIN again, the 4 weapons we use, along with the SEITEI Jo and later into SEITEI Sword

We would look at cycling the SHINDEN FUDO Ryu DAKEN after this, so you have four comprehensive NINPO schools you have covered in the Unarmed Phase, which compliments the ongoing KEMPO development, and the cycling of KARATE Kumite

It may well end up that more NINPO is done at Grass and more KARATE is done at Class, as we of course also bring Karate into the KB Sparring over the Summer Season

With the overlap between Togakure Weapons and the Kukishin, especially with the Sword, paired with the KOBUDO we are already doing, the Togakure Taijutsu complements the other 4 schools, in particular Gyoko and Koto as the moves are based on their Gata -this then applies to GIKAN Ryu as it also comes from their scrolls

At this point you have NINPO Taijutsu, striking based systems like KEMPO, based on 6 schools

Gyokko Ryu Koshi Jutsu

Koto Ryu Koppo Jutsu

Shinden Fudo Ryu Daken Taijutsu

Kukkishin Daken Taijutsu

Togakure Taijutsu

Gikan Ryu Koppo Jutsu

this is more comprehensive than just following the TenChiJin the way it is listed on that thread

This then leaves us with the two JuTaiJutsu schools

Shinden Fudo Ryu Jutaijutsu - which pairs with Shinden Fudo Ryu Dakentaijutsu

Takagi Yoshin Ryu - which pairs with Kukishinden Ryu Dakentaijutsu

which as mentioned elsewhere are vast in the techniques presented in their own scrolls

We have already covered the first scroll for each and will cycle that first, moving up the levels on both taking our time, making sure we relate these both to their corresponding Daken school, as well as the STMA Jujutsu we already have with it's sources, JJ Combatives, Judo, Aiki

Again, rather than making this complex and overloading Members, this information is already there, it has been posted on the Forum for over a decade and Members, in particular Seniors, have covered some or all of it, and cycled a lot of it - this is just a streamlined way to present and explain it, just as we do for KALI, KEMPO and JUJUTSU - it's been on the Boards some since 2009, most since 2012

As for the other two Ninja schools

Kumagakure Ryu Ninpo

Gyokushin Ryu Ninpo

they take their movement from Gyoko Ryu, through Togakure Ryu, and we would reference them as we go when relevant

eg Gyokushin TD and ground

eg Kumogakure armour
