On the Ninja school thread I have added new notes about what generation we are in for each school and so,e historical notes one how these schools were founded, when, and by whom
It is not always easy to understand how and why these Ryuha come to be, so here is an explanation using us as an example
STMA, the British Shiro Tora school was founded by The Guvnor in 2009
What we practice and where it comes from has been extensively discussed and documented and is well known to all Members
We have also listed what we do not practice and why
One example is Judo, at which I am a Black Belt and competed as a heavyweight - we do some Judo at STMA, but what we do not do is regular practice of all the throws, Randori and sparring
Say The Guvnor sets up a new class for Judo, maybe in the same hall, maybe a different venue, on a different night - maybe some STMA Members try it, some do not keep going,MA couple do, but the core of this Judo club would be new Members
The Judo club develops in parallel but separate to STMA - some Judo club members come to try STMA, and some stay
The Guvnor, already 4th Dan Jujutsu, and preparing for his 5th Dan, may consider advancing his Judo grades, taking 2nd Dan and so on - this does not matter or is really relevant
At the Judo club, the Guvnor adds other elements - on the Ground, as well as Judo Newaza, the Gracie Combatives are added, and later the Master Cycle
In the standing Aiki techniques are added, as well as Aiki pins - the Goshin Kata is added
And the Atemi, standing and on the ground are added, something few to no Grapplimg schools cover
Because KEMPO, karate, and Koppo are all being covered at STMA, there is no need to practice the, at the Judo club
The system practiced there starts to resemble the Kyushindo of Abbe Sensei, which is actually the primary source, though with the Karate and Kobudo left out, and the Gracie elements included
With a separate grading system, the new club generates some Black Belts
Some students now have grades in both STMA and the Judo based Jujutsu as it has now become club
At some logical point the new school and system will have a name, separate from STMA
So what has happened is that the Guvnor, Kancho of STMA, has founded, developed, and become Kancho of a new second school
And this is essentially how new Ryuha come about
Toda family founded Gyoko Ryu, the 10th Soke founded Koto Ryu, a Gyoko Master founded Gikan Ryu
Toda family developed the Ninja Togakure Ryu, later the Ninja Gyokushin Ryu, and finally the third school KUMOGAKURE
Using our example story, in the next generation there will be Members who are Master Instructor Shihan at STMA who will have their own schools and teach what they have learnt
There would also be Shihan from the second school, the JJ school who went to start their own schools
And there will be Members who attended and studied at both, though usually one more than the other, a Shihan of STMA who also has a Instructor licence of the JJ, and vice verse
