Sunday March 29 was the scheduled Spring Camp, 3 hours on the Grass - changing weather meant sun, some snow, some hail, some rain, wind and clouds

Monday 18 May and Monday 25th May, the Bank Holiday were full on 3 hour multi skill Camps in their own right

We have done a lot of day sessions, and have included KB pads and drills, as well as weapons sessions - evenings sessions on the Grass, and under the Canopy, and a cold rainy day under the Canopy - most of these have been two hours, sometimes we extended into the third hour

As well as the three Camps, we did 26 extra sessions over the 8 week period

Moving into June, the intention is to carry on with the regular session Monday 7.30pm

We would look to continue this session until mid-late September while weather allows

Opening a venue Dojo will depend on various factors, in particular availability - we would look to have a Dojo open by the end of Summer latest before the autumn evenings set in

We have always had the STMA Summer Camp in mid August so will look to do so in 2020

In 2019 we updated and streamlined the WC Series - we did work on some of this at the time and will look to cover more of the trapping and applications over the Season

It is worth taking some time to go through the old posts on the Feng Wei/WingChun/Jun Fan board, some go back to 2009, and are relevant today, especially in what we are currently covering as Street applications of everything:

Some of the original ideas for naming a new system:

AFA - Applied Fighting Arts
S.P.A.R.K.S or S.P.A.R.C.S stands for Scientific Progressive Aggressive Response Combat Systems

A lot of the Street and SD stuff we never moved anywhere else:

Self defence against punch
The IJ - the eye jab
The shin kick
The KO - the Power Punch
The Power Kick
The Power Slap - The “Shocker”
Biting
The First Rule of Self Defence
The Law
Rapid Assault Tactics - RAT
The Straight Blast
Interception
PEs - Pre-emptive strikes
Gun defence
Groin strike

and the sub board on CRA - the Close Range Arts

ATEMI

As we are looking at more Ju Jutsu, both Standing, Shoot, and Ground this Season, we also want to consider the Atemi strikes

There is nothing here we don't already have in Kempo, the important thing is not abandon Kempo to go into a "wrestling / grappling " phase

The strikes change the game, as we have seen

Watch the UFC clips - but remember the most important point , we are not training for the Cage, we are training for the Street

Pisao - to Clinch
Heel kick - against BH
Side elbow - against standing choke - before waki gatame
Power Slap standing
Shuto standing

Throw to palm heel Teisho
Throw to stomp kick
Against shoot - knee - before guillotine
Grab - body knee

In Guard def - palm strike, elbow, head

Guard
heel to kidney and thigh
Mawashi ken
Face stomp kick
Double stomp kick get up

Mount turnover Palm strike
Mount arm bar hammer

The GUN Defence thread

I first posted this in 2009 when we started practicing the STMA Def - The One That Works

I then made a second post in 2014 when we added the Rod Series

Following the Summer Camp, we go into the last phase of the Summer season

Links to full lists of techniques we will be tapping over the rest of the season:

I originally posted the JJGameplan over the early months of 2014 as we were first developing it, and the RDD/ FSD at the same time

Though we have always referenced Judo throws, the full list was only published this year

I first posted the full SD Kempo list, in this order, in 2015, at the start of the "longest Summer Camp ever"

I first posted about the Kempo Free Formula in 2013 and added a more comprehensive list this week

Notes I made after a Friday evening Grass session:

part of the training is using the environment and that includes the darkness and the weather - too much is relied on the artificial conditions of a Dojo or studio in modern times

Ninja training always used to be outdoors in the dark, as that's where the actual fights and missions took place - this is not like the Samurai, or any other culture's armies, who arranged a battle and waited until the sun came up, after breakfast, before starting the battle - the Ninja way is to kill the enemy the night before the battle

Modern military, from the SAS to the Navy SEALS (and the covert units you have never heard of) take advantage of night and natural conditions for Commando Assault

In modern Street fighting and Self Defence, though fights do happen during the day, chances are you will be fighting outside the chip shop at night - if you are a Bouncer, which is where most of our modern applications come from, all your fights will be at night, outside under street lamps, or in a dark club

In ancient times, one did not build a Dojo and training tools, one used the "things of nature"

The weekly Class summary and the working through the NEXT list have detailed the progression on the Grass over the Summer

The original plan for 2020 was to do what we did in 2016, the regular Dojo session with a secondary Grass session over the Summer evenings

As it turned out, due to the weird circumstances, we did what we did in 2015, all Grass training - this also included days for the first part, and the usual Spring and Summer Camps flowed in

The allowed us to source the NINJA Ryuha in more depth than we had intended or would have been able to - and to do far more with JUJUTSU including TDS and a lot of NEWAZA Ground

Next week we return to DOJO training at our new venue

Back to our proven format

KALI - Sticks, knife
Unarmed - Kempo, JJ and Koppo
KICKBOXING - Pads Drills and Sparring

We will be doing more with the links between KEMPO and KOPPO
Kempo Free Form - linking SD to KB
Newaza drills - adapted to the wood and STREET

JKD - for the first time in a few years, directly sourcing JKD for Interception, for STREET and how it applies moving in KB phase

KB - a return to the drilling and sparring

SILAT - this is the next Art we intend to Source - how much we do now or later depends on how things go

NEXT SUMMER - it may seem a bit early, however when you train over years and decades, you do tend to plan ahead - on the presumption that the regular Class, Monday Kenley at this time, is still going well, we can look at the 2016 model for 2021 and add evening Grass as a second session, the massive advantage is we can now build on the long summer of training covered in 2020

So the next chapter, for Autumn 2020, is the new Kenley Dojo

This is the 4th STMA Dojo following on from Caterham, Shirley, and the two chapters at Sanderstead, since 2009

The Grass training at the Circle has been our constant

Next year 2021 will be the 13th year of STMA

- and our new Chapter starts NOW
