the 3 Royce fights in the early UFCs to which I've been referring:
UFC1 Ken Shamrock

UFC3 Kimo

Possibly Royce's toughest fight - against Kimo UFC3.
Kimo keeps things standing for what seems like ages and when it does go down he takes Royce's back.
When Royce does take the mount, Kimo immediately upas him and Royce now has to fight from the guard once more, form which Kimo escapes to again take the back.
Once the guard is re-established, Royce has to resort to hair grab and punching.
Kimo es...capes and the fight goes to standing, with Kimo taking the back looking for a suplex.
The fight collpases to the floor and this time Royce gets the armbar and Kimo taps.
Though it's not shown here, Royce was literally carried out of the ring by his brothers and then had to withdraw from the contest.
UFC4 Dan Severn

The classic Royce vs The Beast UFC 4. This was back in the day when there really were No Rules - this is NOT an "MMA" match, the term "Mixed Martial Arts" did not exist back then, that came later with it's own format and set of rules.
Royce uses the guard and the use of atemi, the heel kick to the kidneys and ribs, and the mawashiken to the temple and ribs - 2 atemis also used in standing kempo that are not to be overlooked or underestimated.
The fight finishes with Royce submitting Dan with sangaku jime, the world's first look at the Triangle Choke
(unless you saw Lethal Weapon 10 years before at the cinema of course, and that's a different story)
Brilliant commentary at the end "there's nothing there - there's nothing there - Severn's in great position - there's no real power in those legs to choke him" , Severn's answer - he taps out!
Royce does his typical strategy of faking kicks to keep the opponent at outrange until he is ready to close the gap and take it to the mat.
Unusually it is Severn who goes for the leg td - and Royce doesn't sprawl, instead he is taken down, and then pulls guard, which is where he wanted to be anyway.
