I will be bringing bokken, wooden swords, along so we can practice mutodori, sword defence, a lot of which involves rolling
there will then be sword drills both from samurai kenjutsu and ninja bikenjutsu - which will all relate to the kali you know, specifically largo mano
back at the dojo we can practice muto techniques involving jumping and not rolls - although you would need to roll on wood if you want to be able to roll on concrete
having said that, mutodori was originally devised on softer surfaces like grass, there were no concrete streets back then
having said that... even though you are unlikely to be attacked by a katana on the streets, it has happened, and there are many long contemporary weapons that mutodori can save you from - so you need to do it on a hard floor at some time if you want it to be "real"
those members who go onto puchase their own katana will have the opportunity to learn iai and batto:
iaijutsu - sword drawing, cutting and sheating live kata
battojutsu - the art of cutting
of course iaijutsu is largely practiced with katana in dojo
batto is best done with machete and batto katana and done outside - and grass day is a great opportunity to go hack through some branches
