In kobudo, kali and krabi, we block the stick at a point below the tip so the tip never strikes it's intended target, we defend the angle - in karate we block the forearm of shin with out forearm or shin so the intended striking tool, the punch or kick, never reaches it's intended target, we defend the angle

After kobudo practice, the speed of the stix and the staff, as well as the power of cracking wood on wood hard contact, unarmed defence using karate is far simpler to achieve and perfect

A karate expert is a weapons expert fighting without weapons, he does not fear another man even if that man has weaapons, he certainly does not fear him if he is unarmed
