The Hanbo is the primary weapon from the stick system of Kukki shinden Ryu
In STMA it sits between the Kali stick and the Jo, the krabi and the krabong
It is half the length of a Bo staff
In kali this matches the largo Mano stick
It is walking stick length, which makes it an ideal street self defence tool, especially for older people
While largo Mano is done with a largo rattan stick, light enough to be used with one hand, the Hanbo is made from red oak and is heavier, and the techniques, like the Jo, are mainly two handed
As with the kihon happo of taijutsu, the Hanbo has it's own kihon happo, eight basic movements which are the first beat in avoiding the opponents attacking lunge while making a strike to a target such as the ribs or hand for a defang
The followup techniques are a lock and takedown in the primary series. You make one of the kihon happo as your first beat then flow into the move
Kihon happo Hanbo
From hira ichimonji Kamae
Against a knife stepping thrust attack
Step back outside, strike suigetsu
Step back inside, strike suigetsu
Step forward outside, strike ribs
Step back and strike wrist 4 ways
Inside and outside
Mirror stance, parallel stance
The eight waza is a single hand thrust to suigetsu or throat, like a fencing thrust
Hanbo torite
Tsuke iri - outside Armbar, like Ikkyo
Koshi ori - hip break - inside straight arm td
Ganseki otoshi
Ude garame
Oni ku daki
Kocho dori - like muso dori
Kyokotsu ku daki - chest crush
Ryo ashi dori - double leg seize
The main series for Hanbo is based on a knife thrust #5
There are subsequent series defending against other attacks
Kicks
Wrist and sleeve grabs
If the Hanbo is grabbed, like Jo dori
Rear attacks
We will cover these in due course
Keep in mind the main attention of Hanbo Jutsu is a self defence weapon, though it comes from Kukkishinden, it is not a battlefield weapon
In contrast the largo stick in Kali is a field weapon, many of it's moves and concepts coming from the Filipino Kampilan sword
KIHON WAZA -
the Hanbo Kihon happo followed up with the lock and td form this series - a lot like Kempo Jutsu, defend the attack, strike, followup with lock and td, ground finish
12 Hanbo v unarmed
3 hanbo v sword
SHODEN kata - 8 techniques
CHUDEN kata - 4 techniques
OKUDEN kata - one technique - multiple sword defence
