NEWAZA is the first reason - to cover the Ground phase of combat. This does not just mean Grappling, we look at options for Kempo Strikes, Kyusho pressure points and Ninja small knives.
Our Ground Newaza comes as much from KODOKAN Judo as it does from the GRACIE progressions and combatives. The STMA Fundamental Combatives sequence for Ground has more work in the Scarf Hold and Side Mount and has submissions for both. We view the scarf hold as a key position for the STREET as it has been used by us on many occasions.
The Basic Ground Drill is Escape The Mount, Pass The Guard, Take The Mount - which is then repeated by your partner.
We view the basic drill as GROUNDBUD - using the Kali HUBUD principle in Standing Corto range that makes the CRA functional, we view the basic drill as the way to make the Newaza techniques functional. Just as we have bent arm locks, straight arm bars and chokes in the standing Ju Jutsu, we use the same 3 groups on the ground - whether in Mount, Guard, or Rear Mount, in Side Mount or Scarf hold. The Ju Jutsu you do on the ground is the same Ju Jutsu you do standing. There are a lot of different ways to do the techniques, and variations, but they are the same class of techniques. Even the leg locks we do on the ground are the same ones we do when the attacker is down and we are still standing.
KEMPO JUJUTSU - the Kempo series 5 where we take the attacker down and finish with a Kempo method - as well as other techniques where a takedown can be used
JUJUTSU and AIKIJUTSU - the locks and projections we already do, but taken right to the ground
NINPO TAIJUTSU - some of you have experienced taking these moves right to the ground on Grass Days - with mats there are options to try them in the Dojo.
The KOSHI Jutsu and KOPPO Jutsu methods we have been doing can often be taken to the floor - and Ninpo rolling can be used in the practice as a receiving method and counter
JIU JITSU Standing Series - the methods for shoot, clinch and takedown to get to Ground phase
JUDO - though we don't usually use these in regular training, there is an opportunity for Members to learn and practice the Judo Nage throws with each other, should they wish to do so.
KARATE Sweeps - Ashi Waza are part of Traditional Karate and have developed and used in Traditional Kumite and Shiai for decades now.
