Side mount defence is an important area to consider and has some depth to it. It is the final area of the combative ground study and special attention needs to be taken before we cycle back to the start with the mount escapes as they are defences against the most dangerous opponent
The attacker who takes the side mount is a skilled grappler, he has intention and purpose, techniques and a game plan
This attacker has either got past your stage five or has past your guard so we need to use shrimp and shoot to put him back in the guard
If he has established side mount we need to escape, so we set up our frame and use that to perform the shrimp back to the guard
If the opponent attempts to pass to the mount, and knows how to use the Ushiro kesa to block our shrimp, he will use the step or the knee drive, and this gives us the opportunity to shrimp on the other side to put him back in the guard
Our strategy is to keep him in the guard and submit from their, he is trying to pass the guard, take the side mount, then take the mount, so our strategy is one of counter moves to keep him in the guard and exhaust his options
If he does succeed in passing to the mount then we start back at the beginning with our options for mount escape
