If you look at the old ryuha they trained like we do, covered everything - I had an article printed in the Sep 2009 issue of MAI that discusses this. The idea of seperate "martial arts" that specialises in different "bits" is a modern invention.
Bruce Lee predicted things would come back together again.
He didn't predict MMA - and like I say the whole point is not to "mix" different "martial arts" together but to understand that they were never really separate in the first place.
